Played with a specially designed turntable controller, players follow the instructions on the screen in a Guitar Hero style timeline. The game play itself is challenging. The plastic fake turntable included with the game feels sturdy enough, but you will almost certainly spend hours mastering your skills at sampling, scratching and cross-fading with precision before you can earn decent scores on the medium-difficulty setting or above. Pressing buttons on a record’s surface bears no resemblance to DeeJaying in real life, of course, but moving the record back and forth to generate those classic record scratch sounds feels true to form.

Here are the basics to the game. Match the colored buttons on your turntable with the colors on the on-screen rhythm bar. DJ Hero track list still feels a little hip-hop heavy, but there’s a much better balance of electronica, pop and every Lady Gaga song your mom likes. DJ Hero might inspire newcomers to the culture to pick up a turntable or two. But it’s really a love letter to those of us who did grow up idolizing the DJ in the booth rather than the musician in the band. DJ Hero was made just for you. The creators of the hugely popular video game Guitar Hero know how to combine entertainment with real-world action and musical adventure.
